How to Trade Anxiety & Fear for Hope & Peace

matthewljacobson-com_comfortVoices we listen to . . . they’re powerful, aren’t they? And, not just the voices inside the heads of young, immature kids. We expect them to be powerfully affected by their thoughts and self-talk.

What about us? What about the adults in the room . . . about you and me?

You’ll never measure up . . . This will never amount to anything . . . You’re too . . . You’re not enough . . . You’ll never be free from . . . You’ll never have . . . You’ll always fall into . . .

Voices . . .

Powerful.

Life affecting.

Game-changing.

We can spend a lot of time caught up in negative, destructive, energy-sapping, joy-stealing thoughts. Have you been there? I certainly have. And for most, it’s not a place we used to go but a battle we have to wage.

Of the many voices bombarding us throughout the day, which ones have power in our lives? The voices we listen to. It’s that simple. The thoughts we dwell on are the thoughts that animate our day –  encouraging and strengthening or distressing and destroying, until our soul feels like some deserted, bombed-out building in a war zone we saw in our news feed.

And too often, it’s voice of the bombed building that wins – empty, hopeless, fearful . . . everything God came to remove from the hearts of His Children.

God has a voice too. He has spoken. His voice is True and Good, filled with messages of hope and peace.

Are you listening to The Voice of Truth, today, or to the voice of failure, anxiety and negativity – the voice of your enemy?

You and I have the power to choose not to listen – not to dwell on – the anxious thoughts that eat away our peace and joy like a cancer.

How do we do that? How do we get free from destructive thoughts and order our mind to dwell on Truth . . . to believe what God has said?

To do that, we have to listen. To truly listen, we have to hear. And where is God’s voice to be found in the chaotic din of all the other voices?

Where can you find the Voice of Truth, today?

His Word.

The Bible.

Oh, that. Yeah, I have a Bible . . . somewhere around here.

Yes, but have you read it? Do you read, it? Sometimes Christians act as if having a Bible collecting dust on a shelf will stave off vampires, werewolves, and zombies. But it’s not a magic book. Regardless of how we may be feeling, the Bible is God’s Voice to you and to me.

You and I are responsible for what we listen too. For God’s voice to be heard, His Word must be read . . . and believed.

Anxious? Fearful? Alone? Feeling hopeless? What does The Voice of Truth have to say about all that?

TRUTH: I will never leave you or forsake you . . .  Hebrews 13:5

Christian, today, right now, no matter what your circumstances, God is with you because He has promised never to abandon you. He is trustworthy. Believe the Truth. He is with you, right now.

TRUTH: And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

Even the worst things we experience fall into the category of “all things”. Christian, God has plans for all of your bad stuff. We can respond with a cynical sneer as we hear the Words of God and compare them to our present trauma or embrace God’s promise and wait with expectation for His use of that trial for good. Believe the Truth. He makes all things new and will use your worst for His best . . . if you let Him.

TRUTH: Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:35/38,39

Christian, the worst trial doesn’t have the power to separate you from the love Jesus Christ has for you. Believe the Truth. He cares deeply and is with you in the Valley of Shadows.

TRUTH: . . . take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, With what will we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:31,32

His name is Jehovah-Jireh – The Lord Will Provide. Sometimes we get our needs and our wants confused but, Christian, He knows what you need and He will be true to His name. Believe the Truth.

TRUTH: Be anxious for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6,7

Christian, God’s peace is promised to those who bring their requests to Him with a truly seeking heart, entreating him (supplication) – not just a flippant prayer – and with a thankful heart. It’s easy to forget that part. Our Father wants thankful kids and is ready to cover them with supernatural peace and a heart guarded from anxiety that simply can’t be understood, in human terms. Believe the Truth. MatthewLJacobson.com_GODDoWhatHeSaysFBQDo what God says and He will do what He promised.

Today is like all the other days . . . filled with voices. The voice you listen to affects everything.

Who are you listening to, today?
